John tells his readers to test the spirits because many false prophets have gone out into the world, then hands them a test: what does the teacher confess about Jesus come in the flesh? This study takes 1 John 4:1-6 as a working standard for discernment — how a claim to speak for God is weighed, and why the apostle expects the world to listen to some voices and not others.
