God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble, and James follows that promise with a run of imperatives: submit, resist, draw near, cleanse, mourn. This study takes them in order, asking what repentance looks like when it is more than regret, and why laughter turned to mourning is offered as mercy rather than punishment.
